Safe and Efficient Base Station Testing with RF over Fiber Technology

Modern cell sites have a distributed architecture, where the base-station transceiver subsystem is divided into two main elements:
  1. A baseband unit (BBU) performing base band functions in the digital domain, which resides at the base of the tower;
  2. and, a remote radio head (RRH) performing radio frequency (RF) functions on an analog domain, which is installed next to the antennas at the top of the tower.
These two radio elements, the BBU and RRH, communicate via a standard interface such as the common public radio interface (CPRI) or Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI).

Although this architecture allows for excellent coverage and capacity compared to its predecessor, having a RRH at the top of the tower also offers some challenges. Since all RF functions reside on the RRH, any RF maintenance or troubleshooting such as interference analysis requires reaching the top of the tower to get access to the RRH, which can lead to higher operational expenses and security concerns. To address this challenge, RF over fiber test solutions, such as RFoCPRI and RFoOBSAI, have been introduced.

In this webinar, we will discuss practical and efficient methods of testing fiber-fed radios, and how engineers can safely run comprehensive RF tests from the ground using these new solutions.
