Automotive connectivity and the road to autonomous driving

The automotive sector has been a major growth engine for Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.’s  diversification strategy. Speaking during Mobile World Congress 2023, Senior Director of Technology Shailesh Patil talks through how the company keeps safety at the center of automotive ambitions. He also discusses how in-vehicle computing is bolstered by robust car-to-cloud connectivity.

Advanced automotive connectivity

At Mobile World Congress 2023, Qualcomm demonstrated how cloud connectivity can be used to increase awareness of vulnerable road users (VRUs), showcasing how advanced connectivity can play a vital role in improving road safety for drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians. This demo leverages cloud connectivity and the Snapdragon Car-to-Cloud Services as tools to improve VRU safety. VRUs and motorists can use cellular connectivity to share their locations with the cloud, or pedestrian detection cameras can relay VRU positions to the cloud allowing safety informational alerts provided to vehicles via low-latency 5G. This helps to reduce the risk of crashes and other incidents.
